I am Here   

Harumi Ori

This series of sculptures, entitled I am Here, is based on a poem of the same name by Japanese poet Michio Mado, which speaks of the concept that being is meaning. There is truth in any moment, however ordinary.

I started this project by taking photos of an ordinary spot, day after day, at the exact same time, from the same vantage point. Despite the constants of time and place, no two photos were ever the same. An endless parade of humans, cars, and even birds, guaranteed that every moment captured was different.

These photos formed the basis for I am here.

I chose to work with plastic mesh, a material used to create temporary fencing in urban construction sites. Plastic mesh seemed a good medium for reconstructing the impermanent moments recorded with my digital camera ––it recalls the nature of construction sites, temporary, and it creates a pixel-like visual effect. I have produced these series of work to be site-specific where they have been displayed.

I am captivated by ever-shifting time and space. Through the process of constructing such ephemeral moments, I find beauty and am awed by our being.

「I am Here」のシリーズは、詩人まどみちお氏の全ての存在、瞬間を讃えた作品「ぼくがここに」から感銘を受け2001年から制作しているものです。当時通っていた大学の通学路の同じ場所で同じ時間に写真を撮り、それを彫刻という空間でみせるという作品からこのシリーズは始まりました。素材として使用しているプラスチックの網は、工事現場などで囲いなどとして一時的に使われる物で、その工業製品的な無機質さとレイヤーの美しさに魅かれ使い始めた素材です。また、過ぎていく瞬間を永遠の形に置き換えるというコンセプトのわたしの作品に、工事現場で一時的にだけ使われる素材を用いることで空間を再構築する、という対比に興味を持ちました。これまで展示する会場と関連のある場所を選び制作してきました。 彫刻という媒体を使い、ある日のある時間を三次元に再現し、どの瞬間でも私たちのいる空間は完璧であり美であり、そして生命、存在することの美しさを表現したいと考えています。
